Houston First Corporation has restructured its leadership as the organization moves forward with major convention center and district development projects in Houston. The changes separate venue operations from development functions and place longtime executives in expanded leadership roles.
The restructuring comes as Houston First continues work on the George R. Brown Convention Center’s GRB South expansion and the larger Convention District Transformation initiative. By creating separate leadership for venues and development, Houston First is positioning those functions to receive dedicated oversight as the organization plans for future growth.
Houston First Separates Venue Operations and Development
The restructuring divides Houston First’s Convention and Cultural Facilities division into two departments: Venues & Events and Development.
The Development department will oversee real estate, development, and capital projects, including the GRB South expansion and other phases of the Convention District Transformation initiative. Venue operations will focus on the day-to-day management of Houston First’s convention and event facilities.
Separating these responsibilities allows the organization to focus independently on both the development of Houston’s convention infrastructure and the operation of the venues that already serve major events.
Three Executives Take on Expanded Roles
Houston First promoted three longtime leaders as part of the restructuring.
Luther Villagomez was named chief development officer. With nearly 40 years of experience with Houston First and its predecessor organizations, Villagomez will lead the organization’s real estate, development, and capital projects teams. His responsibilities include the GRB South development and the Convention District Transformation initiative.
John Gonzalez was promoted to chief venues and events officer. Gonzalez, who has worked with Houston First for nearly 30 years, will oversee venues, events, parking, information technology, and security departments.
Todd Holloman was promoted to senior vice president of venues and events. He will oversee theater venues, planning functions, and event services while supporting Gonzalez in the organization’s venue leadership.
Houston First will also create an assistant general manager position for the George R. Brown Convention Center. The position will oversee convention services, guest services, facility operations, and engineering while reporting to Gonzalez.
What the Restructuring Means for the George R. Brown Convention Center
The leadership changes come at an important time for the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Houston First is continuing to develop the GRB South expansion as part of its broader Convention District Transformation initiative. Villagomez’s new role places the development and capital projects work under dedicated leadership, while Gonzalez and Holloman will focus on venue and event operations.
For exhibitors and event organizers, convention center development can affect more than the amount of available space. Expansion projects can influence how events are planned, how exhibitors are accommodated, and how organizers coordinate the different elements of a large convention.
As Houston continues investing in its convention infrastructure, companies exhibiting at the George R. Brown Convention Center should pay attention to how future developments affect event layouts and exhibit requirements.
Why Convention Center Expansion Matters to Exhibitors
Convention center expansion can create opportunities for events to grow while giving organizers additional options for configuring exhibit floors and supporting spaces.
For exhibitors, those changes can also create new considerations when planning a trade show booth. Companies may need to account for different booth footprints, floor plans, traffic patterns, meeting areas, signage, displays, and other elements of their exhibit strategy.
The right Houston trade show display depends on the event, available space, branding goals, and the way a company wants attendees to interact with its booth. A flexible exhibit solution can make it easier to adapt to different event requirements.
Houston’s Convention District Continues to Develop
The GRB South expansion is part of a larger effort to transform Houston’s convention district.
Houston First operates the George R. Brown Convention Center along with several other art, entertainment, and event venues. The organization’s decision to separate development from venue operations reflects the scale of the projects currently underway and the need to manage both long-term development and ongoing event operations.
For Houston’s trade show industry, continued investment in convention infrastructure can provide opportunities for future events while creating additional demand for exhibit design, booth construction, logistics, signage, and other event services. Companies exhibiting in Houston and throughout the state can benefit from understanding what you need to know about Texas tradeshows when planning for upcoming events.
Planning a Trade Show Display in Houston
Companies preparing for events at the George R. Brown Convention Center should consider their exhibit requirements well before the show.
Booth size, display configuration, signage, lighting, meeting areas, storage, shipping, installation, and dismantling all need to be coordinated around the event’s requirements. Companies exhibiting at multiple events may also benefit from displays that can be reconfigured for different booth sizes and venues.
Trade show booth rentals can provide another option for companies that need a professional custom exhibit for a specific event without maintaining a permanent display.
For larger events, an island booth can also be designed around the available footprint and specific goals of the company.
Preparing for the Future of Houston Trade Shows
The full impact of the GRB South expansion and Convention District Transformation will depend on how the projects continue to develop.
The leadership restructuring at Houston First demonstrates that the organization is treating convention center development and venue operations as separate areas of focus. With dedicated executives overseeing each function, Houston First will be able to continue managing current events while also advancing its long-term development plans.
For exhibitors, keeping track of these developments can help with long-term exhibit planning. As Houston’s convention infrastructure changes, companies may have new opportunities to participate in larger or more complex events at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Exhibitors planning larger or more visually engaging displays can also consider Houston LED video wall rentals as part of their exhibit strategy.
Houston’s Convention Center Expansion Moves Forward
Houston First’s leadership restructuring comes as the organization continues planning and development work at the George R. Brown Convention Center and throughout the Convention District.
By separating development responsibilities from venue and event operations, Houston First is creating dedicated leadership for both sides of its convention strategy.
For exhibitors and event organizers, the changes are another indication that Houston’s convention infrastructure is continuing to develop. Companies planning future events at the George R. Brown Convention Center should consider how changes to the facility may affect booth sizes, exhibit layouts, and overall event planning.
